Jamie Ross attended Columbia University. One of her classmates was Chuck Rodman, who later became a federal prosecutor. She married Neil Gorton, a fellow lawyer, and for a time they worked together in the same private law firm where, out of eight cases, Ross got seven aquittals. One of the cases she and Neil co-defended involved a sex killer named James Carper. They got him a walk, despite the fact that his DNA was all over the crime scene. Three months later, he committed another murder. Neil and Jamie had a daughter together, Katie, but eventually they divorced. The divorce settlement left Ross financially well-off, so she didn't have to worry about money; she decided she wanted to start working for "the other side" and joined the District Attorney's office. Neil remained in private practice. Ross was given custody of their daughter. In the middle of a case involving both Ross and her ex-husband, Neil challenged Ross's custody on the grounds that she wasn't spending enough time with their daughter. Ross began to cut down on her hours at work so that she could spend more time with Katie. After her significant other asked her to marry him (she accepted), Neil again challenged custody, this time on the grounds that, because of Jamie's hours, her new husband would be Katie's primary caregiver. Weighing work against family, Ross decided to resign from the District Attorney's office.
