Ben Stone married and had a daughter, but later divorced. His wife retained custody of their child. Stone worked as an assisstant district attorney under, first, Alfred Wentworth, and later Adam Schiff. He had a strong dislike for Deputy police commissioner Jefferson, who he believed to be corrupt. (He was later vindicated in this assessment.) Stone was Catholic and lived alone. One of his early cases involved prosecuting Philip Swann. During a case involving the Russian Mafia, Stone compelled a reluctant witness to testify; she was murdered by the Mafia soon after. Guilt-ridden, Stone quit the District Attorney's office. Several years later, he was traveling through Europe.
